Greenpeace: 100 million sharks are slaughtered every year for soup
Join us and the many other organizations, divers and individuals working to end the pillaging of our ocean's ecosystems.

Education

Have an educational site you would like linked to from our site?  Contact us at links@seaprogram.org.

In 2004 seaprogram.org launched an educational campaign to enlighten, teach and promote sharks to elementary school aged children.  We believe children are intelligent enough to look past the fictional portrayal of sharks by motion pictures and media.
It's our intention to teach fact not promote generations of fiction.

Fossils!!!  Because sharks have no bones, it's rare to find a fossil of a shark in tact.  What collectors typically find is teeth.  Sharks have tons of teeth, rows and rows actually.  Like baby teeth, shark teeth fall out but for sharks, teeth fall out and fall out and fall out and keep falling out.

Below is a picture of two shark teeth.  The tooth on the right is actually half a tooth but still shows the serrations.  Both of these come from a prehistoric shark (did you know sharks are older than dinosaurs?). Click on the picture for more information on shark teeth and fossil teeth.

Nearly 350 different species of sharks exist today and only a tiny fraction of those present remote dangers to bathers, divers and surfers.   Unfortunately, all species are subject to slaughter at the hands of commercial fisherman from several countries.

Did you know more people are killed by lighting in the United States than sharks?  The International Shark Attack File reports that 313 people were fatally killed by lighting between 1959 and 1990 in Florida.  During the same period only 4 fatalities were contributed to shark attack.

Did you know the summer of the shark (2001) had less attacks than 2000 when no one even paid attention?  2003 had even less.  The media and motion pictures in particular sensationalize these attacks and the result is the devastation of shark populations.

What you can do to help?

Educate yourself and teach your children. lions, tigers and bears maybe favorites but are largely protected from mankind's butchery.  They are still formidable animals but not hunted the same as sharks.  Buy a shark book, read to your children, share pictures in our gallery, visit an aquarium or better yet, see sharks in the wild, We also have a consistently growing bibliography of books that you can share with kids of all ages.

Sharks are fascinating animals that have graced the oceans for over 400 million years. They are a cornerstone of oceanic ecosystems but remain endangered by massive slaughter through longliners and fishing nets. Help us.

Shark fin soup can be hazardous to your heath, see our Awareness page for more!
